Penalty Abatement
Penalty Abatement simply means removing the penalties (and possibly interest charged on the penalty) after they are assessed to the taxpayer. Any failure-to-file, failure-to-pay, or failure-todeposit penalty can be appealed.
Reasonable cause is the main justification for obtaining a penalty reduction. In general, reasonable cause is based on the analysis and proof that a taxpayer used ordinary care and prudence in establishing his or her tax liability, but failed to meet that liability. In most cases, the taxpayer has the burden of proof when requesting penalty abatement.
