Wage Garnishments
Wage Garnishment is a legal process for collecting a monetary judgment on behalf of a taxing authority from a taxpayer.
If a taxing authority levies (seizes) your wages, they will receive a portion of your paycheck each pay period until you make alternative payment arrangements for your delinquent taxes, the amount of delinquent taxes you owe is paid, or the levy is released.
A portion of your wages may be exempt from the levy. The exempt amount is based on a number of factors. The "amount determined" that is calculated is in part based on the number of dependents you are permitted for the tax year. The IRS encloses Publication 1494 with the levied amount, which instructs your employer on how to calculate the amount exempt from the levied amount.
